Seven accused members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
